인천 유나이티드 FC는 대한민국 K리그 클래식 소속의 프로축구단이다. 2003년에 팀이

창단되어 2004시즌부터 리그에 참가했으며 인천광역시와 인천광역시민이 중심이 되어

창단한 시민구단이다. 인천 유나이티드의 애칭이자 약칭인 '인유' 혹은 '유나이티드'로

불리고 있다. 홈 경기장은 인천광역시 남구 문학동에 있는 인천문학경기장을 사용했으

며, 2012년부터 새로 완공된 인천축구전용경기장을 홈 경기장으로 사용하고 있다.

인천광역시를 연고지로 하는 프로축구단의 창단은 2003년 본격적으로 논의가 구체화가

시작되었다. 구단은 가칭 인천시민프로축구단으로 불렸으며 초기 창단자금으로 150억원

을 책정하고 2002 한일 월드컵을 치르고 남은 자금 30억원과 기업 자금 유치, 시민주 공

모 등을 통해 자금을 모으기 시작했다. 논의는 빠르게 진행되어 K리그 2004 시즌부터 참

여하겠다는 발표가 이루어졌으며 9월에 TSV 1860 뮌헨의 감독으로 유명했던 독일의 축

구 감독 베르너 로란트를 영입했다. 또한 10월에 시민 공모를 통해 구단의 명칭을 인천

유나이티드 FC로 최종 확정하였다. 또한 선수 영입에도 박차를 가해 안양 LG 치타스에

서 최태욱을 영입하고 터키의 국가대표 알파이 외잘란을 영입하는 등 과감한 투자를 했

다. 하지만 예상과는 달리 성적은 저조하여 2004년 K리그 첫 시즌에는 전기리그 13위에

그쳤다. 하지만 후기리그에서는 기세를 올려 4위를 기록했다. 2004시즌 전반기가 종료된

8월에 로란트 감독은 부인의 건강 악화로 인한 개인적인 사정 으로 사임했으며, 장외룡

수석 코치가 감독대행으로 지휘봉을 잡게 되었다.

 

 

Incheon United is a professional Korean football team currently playing in the

K League Classic. The team's home town is Incheon, the third biggest city in the

country, and the club's home stadium is the Incheon Football Stadium. Officially

founded at the end of the 2003 season, the move to create a professional club in

Incheon had come about in part by the construction of the Incheon Munhak Stadium
for the 2002 FIFA World Cup tournament. Incheon city mayor Ahn Sang-soo began

the process of creating the club in earnest in June 2003 with the official founding

of Incheon FC, and German Werner Lorant was appointed as manager of the team

in September of that year, with Chang Woe-Ryong and Kim Si-Seok added to the

coaching staff. A public share issue was launched and ran from October to

November 2003, and in December the name Incheon United was adopted.

Sponsorship contracts worth a total of $4m were signed with Daewoo and

Daeduk Construction, and a deal was struck with Puma to be the inaugural kit

suppliers to the new club.
